Before people could read and before
the Holy Bible was available to everyone, pictures from scriptures
were available painted, carved, assembled in stained glass and formed
in clay to evangelize and educate. It is said that early travelers
along the Old Santa Fe trail felt they would be directed by a sign
or an intuition as to where to stop to make their homes. When such
a place was selected, crosses and other objects of reverence were
made of found items (wood, branches, stones or household trappings)
to create an image of thanksgiving to commemorate homesite and petition
for blessings on the home.
