Native American - Jewelry

Adornments signify wealth. Wealth (wampum) or trade pieces were carried on the person, perhaps worn in a pouch. Shells, Beads Weapons, or Trade Items were prized. Turquoise might be carried in the mouth to dramatize it's blue or green color. The Spanish had silver coins and buttons, and Native Americans made then, and still do, beautiful one of a kind pieces of jewelry. Precious items later were also incorporated into personal items, totem and art pieces both delicate and substantially utilitarian.

Before Native Americans became "Progressive" they wore their art with reverence, and dignity. Today new creative artists continue to innovate with beauty and meaning the legacy of these great cultures.
